“Lessons in Every Stitch: A Reflection on Passing Down the Craft”
Knitting and crochet have long been passed down through generations—skills shared between family members, friends, and even taught in schools. I still remember my own school days, learning to knit under the watchful eye of a strict teacher. One lesson stands out vividly: we had to knit a square using a rather harsh, cream-coloured yarn.
I was proud of my little masterpiece—until the teacher cut a hole right through it.
I was horrified. My “perfect” square was ruined! Then came the twist: she handed me some bright red yarn and told me to fix it. Darning, she called it. I questioned the point of this unnecessary task, but she explained that it was meant to teach us how to repair socks—an essential skill back then. Ironically, I never darned a sock in my life!
Even so, that lesson stuck with me—not because of the darning, but because it reminded me how life’s imperfections can be mended, and how every stitch holds meaning.
Over the years, life swept me away: raising a family, working, and all the responsibilities that come with it. My needles and hooks gathered dust. It wasn’t until the quiet stillness of the pandemic that I rediscovered my passion for yarn, colour, and the meditative rhythm of stitches.
Now, through Magical Yarns, I have the joy of sharing that passion with you. My hope is to inspire others to pick up their needles or hooks—whether you’re reconnecting with an old hobby or learning something new. Let’s pass these beautiful traditions forward, creating threads that connect us through generations, creativity, and joy.
